The Average Cost of Divorce

divorce Jul 25, 2023

Everyone knows divorce is expensive. But people want to know what that means. How much is it?

The average cost of divorce in the United States can range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. According to a recent study by legal website Nolo, the average cost of divorce in the US is $12,900. However, this figure can vary widely based on several factors, including the complexity of the divorce proceedings, the geographic location of the couple, and whether they choose to hire an attorney.

If a couple has a lot of assets or debts that need to be divided, or if there are disputes over child custody or alimony, the cost of the divorce can increase significantly. Nolo's study also found that couples with complex divorces can expect to pay an average of $30,000 in legal fees.

While some couples may choose to represent themselves in divorce proceedings, hiring an attorney can provide valuable legal expertise and guidance. This expertise can come at a cost, however. According to Nolo's study, couples who hire an attorney can expect to pay an average of $15,500 in legal fees.

Gathering and organizing documents yourself during the discovery process is one way you can reduce attorney fees.

The Divorce Money Guide includes checklists and guidance on what documents to gather and it shows you how to organize them to present to your attorney to cut down on time billed.
